We all love to spoil our dogs, and we all know from experience that homemade treats are far better than anything you’ll find in a store. Unfortunately, many human foods can be dangerous for our pups to eat, making it difficult for us to bake for them in the same way that we do for the rest of the family. That’s why we have scoured the internet and found our 5 favourite tried & tested recipes for treats your dog will love. Whether it’s for a special birthday or just to get their tail wagging, these treats are easy to whip up and are sure to please your pup!

1. Banana & Peanut Butter Dog Cakes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup applesauce, unsweetened
  • 1/4 cup molasses, blackstrap
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F
  2. In a stand mixer bowl, add the canola oil, applesauce and molasses.
  3. On low-medium speed, thoroughly combine.
  4. Add the peanut butter, and mix until combined.
  5. Add the eggs one at a time, until all combined.
  6. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and cinnamon.
  7. Using the lowest setting, or the stir setting on your mixer, slowly add the dry ingredients.
  8. In a small bowl, mash the bananas.
  9. Take the mixing bowl off the stand. Fold in the mashed bananas, making sure they are well incorporated.
  10. Using a baking spray with flour, generously spray each 8 inch pan.
  11. Divide the batter between both pans.
  12. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes clean. Rotate the pans on the racks half way through the baking time.
  13. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
  14. Remove the cakes from the pan, and cool completely on a wire rack.

Storing - This dog cake recipe will keep fresh in the refrigerator for about 5 days. Freeze the cakes for up to 3 months. If you choose to freeze the cakes, wrap each one individually with plastic wrap. Then wrap each one with heavy duty aluminium foil. Then place each one in a labelled freezer bag. It may seem like a lot of work, but it will keep the dog cakes delicate texture fresh longer.

 

2. Cheesy Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 
  • 1/2 graham cracker, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tablespoon apple jelly
  • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar for decoration

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (175 degrees C).
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, graham cracker, oatmeal, bouillon, and grated cheese.
  3. Stir in the corn syrup, water, and jelly. Add flour if necessary to make a stiff dough.
  4. Spoon dough onto greased cookie sheet. Make two or four treats depending on the size of your dog. Sprinkle the tops of the treats with the white sugar. Bake in preheated oven for 16 minutes. Cool before serving.

 

3. Peanut Butter Pupcakes

Ingredients- (Makes 6 cakes)

  • 1/2 cup organic whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup apple sauce
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 container of Oikos Greek yogurt with honey
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Mix all the ingredients into a bowl
  3. Scoop batter evenly into cupcake pan
  4. Bake for about 35-40 minutes

Frosting

  • 2 ounces of cream cheese
  • 4 tablespoons canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons of Oikos Greek yogurt with honey
  • 1 tbspn of flour (just to thicken it)

Directions

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth and spread evenly onto “pupcakes”

 

4. Bacon Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 10 tablespoons bacon fat. Melted
  • 5 cups wholewheat flour

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  2. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in milk, water, salt, and bacon fat until well blended. Gradually stir in flour to make a stiff dough. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll into 2 inch balls. Place on prepared baking sheet.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool on racks. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.

 

 

5. Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups wholewheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
  3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes
